Derby Chamber Music ended its current season on not just one high, but two (Multi-Faith Centre, Derby University, 16 April 2010). An appeal, launched six weeks before, to raise the money for DCM to buy the piano it was previously hiring, in order to secure the society’s long-term viability, has overshot its target by some distance.

So it was a fitting end to the season to have the Aquinas Piano Trio playing to what, according to some estimates, was DCM’s largest audience to date. OK, some of that number can be accounted for by the fact that cellist Katherine Jenkinson is a local girl, but it was still a very impressive turn-out.

Beethoven’s ‘Ghost’ Trio got off to a bold, punchy start but, rightly, it was the quiet intensity the players brought to the second movement that made everyone sit up and take notice.

The buoyant energy of the playing in the outer movements spilled over into Schumann’s Second Trio. But the quieter recesses, particularly of the two middle movements, were also explored, with firm control of the music’s mood-swings, and with the darkening tone towards the end of the third particularly well handled.

In the rarely-heard Trio No 2 by Saint-Saëns the playing had both rich sonority and limpid clarity. The players found elegance and grace in the three inner movements, and while they perhaps allowed themselves to get a little too serious in the second of these, there was a lovely smiling poise in the following waltz. Textures in the fugue at the centre of the finale were clear, though the pianist occasionally overwhelmed his colleagues elsewhere. In all, an exhilarating end to one of DCM's most successful seasons yet.
